Multiple syringes are necessary in a normal procedure.
In order to guarantee the best results of a procedure like the ones necessary for botox, multiple syringes are empirical. Most people want to use the least number of syringes in order to get by and save themselves some money. Truth of the fact is that just like in any procedure, desired outcomes are what determine the tools and expertise necessary to achieve them. Quality of service is top of the line here at Escobedo Skin Center. One syringe would only be like wanting to pump a gallon of gas into a vehicle and attempting to drive for 100 miles. The results are just not going to match.
We prioritize providing the most favorable results form any of our services, that is why we use multiple syringes for the different areas covered. Think about the entire area as one whole spot divided into multiple units where every unit requires a different dose therefore requiring a new syringe. In order to achieve ideal results one side needs to be balanced with the other side requiring a new syringe.

Our prices for Botox are competitive with national averages, but some people ask why we charge more than other Botox providers. Botox has exploded in popularity over the last few years, so much so that many med spas and salons have started to offer injections. Many of these places may charge lower fees per unit of Botox, but this doesn’t mean you’ll get quality. The rise of medspa chains has led to price dilution as well as poor quality. Most of these places have closed their doors in the last few years, so one might expect to see normalization in prices.

Botox works for most healthy adults, i.e. you!

The most common reason Botox doesn’t work is because you weren’t given enough of the active product. Always go to a trusted doctor for Botox and don’t try to order it yourself. You could end up with diluted or even fake Botox. If an experienced professional treated you, you may be due for a touch up. Botox results should appear within days and can continue to improve for 30 days. Results will last about 4 months.

Dysport, Fraxel featured on Rachael Ray Show

Peppy chef-turned-celebrity Rachael Ray invited her personal dermatologist (must be nice) to talk about cosmetic procedures on her show this week. Botax Survey

A survey conducted by Opinion Research Corp. showed that the majority of Americans oppose the cosmetic tax.

The national survey included over 1,000 men and women 18 and older. Fifty-two percent opposed the tax, while 43 percent favored the proposed 5% tax on cosmetic procedures.

Sixty-four percent agreed and 37 percent strongly agreed that the tax has no place in health care reform.

Allergan Inc., the company that offers products such as Botox and Juvederm, commissioned this survey, conducted December 3 through 6.

Senators will vote on the bill before Christmas, so make sure to write a letter to your senator or sign the petition at stopcosmetictax.org.

No Botaxation

Though many politicians issued statements denying knowledge of a 5% cosmetic surgery tax, or “Botax”, the plan is still fully on the table. Patients and physicians have begun to speak out against a tax that would mainly discriminate against middle class women.

Many supporters of the tax see it as a funding source for health care overhaul, but the truth of the matter is that this tax puts cosmetic procedures in the same category as “sin tax” items like cigarettes and alcohol. The tax would largely discriminate against women, who make up more than 90% of those electing to get cosmetic procedures.

The cosmetic procedure patient is no longer the stereotypical upper class woman anymore. Research shows that 60% of people considering these procedures are in the middle class, earning between $30,000 and $90,000 per year. Middle class women are more actively seeking self-improvement for signs of aging; sun damage and weight gain from pregnancy or hormonal imbalances.

Amazing Burn Scar Treatment

Escobedo Skin Center is proud and excited to offer burn scar treatments using the Ultrapulse C02 laser. The Ultrapulse recently received recognition when it was used to treat the Berns triplets’ scars. Since that time a growing body of evidence has show promising results— such that Dr. Escobedo has decided to incorporate such treatments in his practice of medicine.

One patient suffers of 3rd degree burns on his arms and hands because of a golf cart explosion at his home last year.

Before treatment, Dr. Escobedo consulted with military Dr. Hibner of Lackland Air Force Base who works with soldiers with burns from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Together they formed a treatment plan to best suit the needs of the patient.

Dr. Escobedo performed a treatment on a portion of the patients’ arm last week. He used the highest heat setting possible to go deep through the 3rd degree burns, soften the skin and reduce the appearance of the scar.

This patient will return soon for a follow-up and we’re excited to see his progress, especially after treatments on his other scars. IPL vs. C02

Since the Ultrapulse C02 laser arrived at Escobedo Skin Center, we’ve been getting questions about IPL treatment (Intense Pulsed Light, commonly called a photofacial) and fractional laser treatments like Ultrapulse and Fraxel.

Many people think that a few cheaper IPL treatments will get rid of wrinkles or deeper skin damage, but that just isn’t true.

IPL Treatment

For sun damage, rosacea, uneven pigment or brown spots, IPL is perfect. But IPL does not treat deeper levels of skin to remove the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Fractional C02 Treatment

Fractional lasers like Ultrapulse and Fraxel treat acne scars as well as signs of aging such as brown spots and wrinkles. They stimulate collagen in the second layer of skin, restoring elasticity and erasing wrinkles and scarring.

Sarah and Jenny are on day 6 after their Ultrapulse Active FX treatment. Sarah, who had a lighter treatment for acne scars has healed almost fully and her scars are now gone. Ultrapulse Treatments Begin Tomorrow

We’re pleased to begin Ultrapulse Fractional Laser Treatments tomorrow. Our staff and our patients are really excited about this new technology, which works much like Fraxel, with better results.

The Ultrapulse uses a pinpointed laser on the face and neck to diminish brown spots, acne and acne scars, wrinkles and even burn scars. Unlike Fraxel, the laser leaves “bridges” or areas of skin untouched by the laser to quicken the healing process.

The benefit of this machine is three treatments in one—Active FX for shallow acne scars, mild acne, fine wrinkles and brown spots; Deep FX for deep wrinkles, loose skin, deep acne scars and burn scars; and Total FX which combines both treatments to remove deep and shallow acne scars.

A Latisse rep came by the office the other day and got everyone excited about it. Their commercial with Brooke Shields has been running constantly on TV, at least on Lifetime during "Addicted to Beauty".

People make fun of the subject, but it's a serious problem we need to fix. The American Cancer Society has a great article explaining what male breast cancer is, and what factors affect risk.

Gynecomastia (or man boobs) isn't cancerous in itself, but just as women are more at risk for breast cancer because they have more breast tissue, men with more tissue are also at greater risk. These men may also have an estrogen imbalance which is causing the extra tissue or may be more obese, another risk factor for cancer.

Breast cancer is also more difficult to detect in men. They don't have routine breast exams and may not be aware of their risks.

Say No to Bo-Tax

The heated health care reform debate has received constant media attention recently. Most have discussed government control and the cost, but it’s important to know what taxes are in the bill to help pay for reform.

One of them is the aptly nicknamed “Bo-tax”, a 10% cosmetic surgery tax on procedures that improve appearance and don’t treat an illness. This tax would include teeth whitening, Botox injections and lipo among many others. $10.3 million was spent last year on cosmetic surgery and 86% of those who went under the knife or needle were women. Intended as a rich tax, the bill ignores the fact that many people in the middle class save for certain procedures, so that when signs of aging pop up in their 40s and 50s, they will have enough money to do something about it.

Most people agree that there’s something wrong with our health care system. But this bill contains a lot that should be questioned and clarified. The debate will continue, so any interested in cosmetic procedures should keep up with the latest news on pricing and taxes. Today there's one big story in the news, which is of course the 8th anniversary of 9/11. There's also a smaller story that caught my attention. The world's oldest woman died today at 115, leaving 114-year-old Kama Chinen of Japan with the new title. Gertrude Baines was born in Georgia in 1894. She's lived in three different centuries, and seen more history we could imagine to learn at school. If you're in school, you know full well that it's dominating your life again and the carefree days of drinking by the pool will be replaced with study sessions, exams and drinking out of the pool.

Most years you've had to worry about some vaccinations, and maybe you didn't care for the flu shot. If you're already sick when you get one chances are you'll get sicker and ward them off every year. But with the H1N1 or swine flu to worry about, you should at least think about your safety when you're bumping into 50,000 other students between classes or at fraternity parties.

The H1N1 vaccination is being tested and should be available by mid-October, but if you're still wary about shots, at least get information about this and the "normal" strain of flu and at the very least, wash your hands often and cover your cough. The CDC now has Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts, so there's no excuse to be as clueless about flu as what your professor is droning on about in class.

Another thing to think about on campus or anytime you're outside is protecting your skin. Summer may be drawing to a close, but the hot Texas sun never

Shrink your waistline, not your brain

A new UCLA study found that brain size and weight may be inversely correlated.

"The brains of obese people looked 16 years older than their healthy counterparts while [those of] overweight people looked 8 years older," UCLA Neurologist Paul Thompson said in the U.S. News article.

These results were found in the elderly obese or overweight. Obesity has already been linked to a greater chance of Type 2 Diabetes and 30% of Americans over 20 are considered obese.

Though the reasons for this relationship isn't clear, Dr. Mitchell Rosin of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York said in the article that "obesity affects every system in your body. The body can't be splintered. It's completely linked. We are what we eat and we eat too much."

The New Zerona Laser Explained

Weight loss is a common struggle encountered by many Americans to date. Although diet and exercise are sensible solutions, at times they are not enough for getting the shape we all want. What is Zerona?

Will Dysport™ trump Botox Injections in Austin?

In April 2009, the FDA approved the release of Dysport , a botulilnum serotype A neurotoxin used for cosmetic and medical treatments. Dysport is used cosmetically to treat glabbelar lines associated with procerus and corrugators muscle hyper-activity in adult patients less than 65 years of age. In other words, it is used to soften the appearance of wrinkles between the eyebrows. Medically, Dysport is indicated for the treatment of adults with cervical dystonia, which causes severe abnormal head positions and neck pain. Dysport has certainly stirred up media-frenzies in that it uses a similar serotype A botulinum toxin, as Botox Cosmetic, which temporarily reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by reducing movement in the muscles. This product was available a few years ago, but Allergan purchased the company who had the rights to sell it. Due to anti-trust laws in the United States, they were forced to give up distribution rights; which conveniently positioned Allergan as the sole provider of neurotoxin A. This time, Allergan’s rival Medicis (distributors of Restylane), intends to distribute Dysport.

Dysport vs. Botox injections:

One of the main arguments supporting Dysport injections is that it diffuses more readily into the injection site than Botox injections. What does this mean? Let’s say that you are looking to treat forehead lines. With Dysport, patients may need less than with Botox injections. Fewer injections results in less bruising and less product, which means cheaper Botox injection costs for consumers.

Another strong difference is the “needle to results time”. Studies show that patients using Dysport benefit in as little as a few hours; Botox® injections take an average of 5-21 days. Lipo 6 in a Nutshell

As the problem of obesity continues to rise, the demand for fast weight loss rises. Some popular solutions to rapid weight loss include: liposuction, weight loss pills, and celebrity diets. Among the popularity, is a fat burning pill known as Lipo 6. Lipo 6, released in 2005, claims to easily eliminate fat instantly in hard to reach areas and in turn build muscle mass. Synephrine

Dr. Escobedo's Favorite Dermal Fillers

People often ask which filler is the best. I respond by saying all filers are the best. The two most important considerations when using a filler are the INDICATIONS and the FILLER (person injecting the product). I explain using the following analogy. If one gives ten individuals a can of paint and a brush, which one is going to produce the best results? The patient smiles as they realize the point.

I use a practical approach for sculpting the face. First I evaluate the bony structures and characteristics. Second, I calculate the degree of change for the most age appropriate rejuvenation. As one ages, a youthful face loses its triangular shape (two prominent cheek bones with a chiseled chin as the base) as it becomes more trapezoidal. In addition, bone density diminishes in the forehead, cheek bones, and chin. This is followed by fat atrophy in almost all compartments of the face resulting in skin laxity. Finally, the skin above the upper lip moves into the mouth; the cheeks collapse; and the chin moves posteriorly.

With all the changes taking place simultaneously, it is essential to return balance and symmetry to these structures. Simply injecting a syringe of Restylane into the lips or smile lines is Not going to produce the best results. Unfortunately, an individual receiving this type of injection therapy does not appear natural.

While there are a plethora of fillers on the market such as Juvederm, Perlane, Restylane, Evolence, Radiesse, Silicone, Sculptra, and Artecol, each fillers has its highest and best use. If you desire a pleasing and natural age appropriate result, I encourage you to visit a physician who understands facial cranial anatomy; the differences among each product; the proper injection depth and technique; and the various features that make a face compelling.

The filler is an important part of the treatment regimen, but the FILLER directing the treatment determines whether or not the end result is natural and elegant.

Spring is in the air, and so is the need for sunscreen! Although it may not feel “that” hot outside, sunscreen is a must have for this season!

Why use sunscreen?
UV (ultra-violet) radiation rays are composed of both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays, which make up 90% of UV radiation, are strongest in the early morning to afternoon and are strong enough to penetrate surface, such as windows. UVB is strongest midday, and is usually associated with sunburn.

Over time, UV rays, especially UVA rays can greatly damage the skin. According to Dr. Mike, the reason these UV rays affect the skin is because the ultra-violet radiation damages the natural collagen in the skin, which can result in pre-mature aging, wrinkles, and leathery skin. UV radiation can also cause cell abnormalities which can result in hyper-pigmentation (discolored skin), broken blood vessels, and even types of skin cancers. The use of daily sunscreen can greatly against pre-mature aging and cancer.

What sunscreen is right for me?

“Higher SPF doesn’t mean higher protection.” –Dr. Mike.

Dr. Mike recommends an SPF of 30 for all his patients. One of the reasons SPFs higher than 30 do not work is that they composed of an extraordinary amount of chemicals. All these chemicals in turn, contradict their “supposed” protection, and are actually less protective of the skin. In addition, the high amount of chemicals can greatly damage the natural composition of the skin, which can result in break outs. Dr. Mike chooses to combat these high chemical products with organic sunscreens, which are composed of honey, cherries, peaches, and other natural ingredients. Do not fear BOTOX

Do not fear BOTOX. Educate yourself!

As an esthetician, I work with Dr. Mike to create customized treatment plans for each patient in our cosmetic dermatology clinic. In about 80% of our consultations, we recommend BOTOX as an excellent alternative to aging prematurely. Many of our patients are thrilled to know that there is a simple solution to stubborn forehead lines, smoker’s lines, and crow’s feet. But about half of them grimace and say something akin to, “Oh, no, I don’t want poison injected in my face.”
As common as this response is, especially in a city like Austin where the natural lifestyle is hip, it still surprises and frustrates me. I feel like many individuals are lacking an understanding BOTOX and are uneducated in the safety of the drug.
So, let’s get the obvious out of the way. Yes, BOTOX is derived from a species of bacteria that can make you very sick, and, yes, there was a doctor in Florida who illegally tried to create home-made BOTOX with terrible consequences. That is the very reason Allergan, manufacturer of BOTOX, spends millions of dollars each year to ensure the safe and well-controlled manufacturing of this medicine. In fact, the consumer knows exactly who makes BOTOX and where it comes from. Can you say the same for more commonly accepted medications? Do you know who makes the aspirin in your cabinet, or the cough syrup in your refridgerator?
Additionally, ruling BOTOX out as a viable preventative for wrinkles because it is a “poison” or toxin is an ill-conceived way of thinking. Imagine if we thought this way of aspirin. Aspirin reduces pain and it can prevent heart attacks by ‘thinning’ blood. Yet this same preventative effect that saves lives, increases the risks of bruising or of bleeding out if one were cut.
We understand that the benefits of preventing a heart attack are worth risking a little extra bleeding with our paper cuts or bigger boo-boos. We don’t see aspirin as a poison simply because it alters a function of the body. That is what medications are all about, after all. So why use this inverted way of thinking to BOTOX, especially since it is much safer than thinning your own blood? All it does is reduce a little muscle movement around the forehead, eyes, or mouth. Nothing like a little relaxation to take the years away, I say!
For more perspective on how little harm a few drops of BOTOX are, let’s talk about the actual amount of medication used in the average treatment. One unit of BOTOX is similar to one small drop of water in volume. One unit of BOTOX is diluted by saline water at a ratio usually of 3 to 1 or 5 to 1. Of those 30 drops, only about 10 of them at the strongest dilution rate are the actually medication. 10 drops! That’s 1/3 the alcohol found in a 4 oz glass of wine!
BOTOX has been used for decades to help people, both cosmetically and medically. Its applications have helped thousands of people with neuromuscular problems since the 1980s. It can reduce migraines, excessive perspiration, facial twitches, and muscle spasms. It is an effective, safe, and affordable choice for reducing wrinkles, softening expression lines, and maintaining a younger look.

Vaser or Laser or Both

VASER OR LASER OR BOTH: YESTERDAYS FAT IN TOMORROWS TECHNOLOGY

It wasn’t that long ago that people were experiencing significant downtime to remove unwanted fat around the abdomen, legs, and back. We all have those pockets of stubborn fat that refuse to respond to diet and exercise. It’s not that we aren’t doing our best to address these spots…sometimes genetics hinders our ability to mobilize that fat properly. Alas, there are several new solutions: the new Vaser LipoSelection and Laser Lipolysis. We merge both technologies together and call it 3D LipoSculpting.
Vaser LipoSelection has to be the greatest invention since sliced bread. Using a third generation ultrasound technology, fat cells lyses using gentle ultrasound waves. Unlike the traditional forms of liposuction (the jab and stab), one doesn’t experience any downtime. The ultrasound waves do not harm the connective tissue matrix OR the integrity of the blood vessels. I tell patients if you lose more than 15 drops of blood, you have lost too much! In addition, the formless skin does not drape like that of traditional liposuction since the connective tissue is not disturbed. All three of these features make Vaser my number one choice for gross fat removal without the adverse events of the past.
Laser Lipolysis may incorporate any laser device such as Smart Lipo, Cool Lipo, Slim Lipo, Lipo Lase, or Lipo Lite . A laser is used to melt the fat, coagulate the blood vessels, and tighten skin. Each device has its pros and cons, but the bottom line is that laser lipolysis offers the additional benefit of tightening the skin on the spot. The one downside of laser lipolysis is its propensity to leave an area uneven should it be the only device used during a procedure. That is why I use the laser to go over areas previously treated by Vaser that might need additional tightening such as the lower abs; male breasts; and inner thighs.
For our 3D LipoSculpture Service, we incorporate the Vaser and the Laser to generate the best results. We have all the greatest tools to get the best results. We treat three different types of patients. For the overweight patient with significant adipose tissue we use Vaser. For the gym bunny with average body fat we use laser lipolysis such as Smart Lipo; and for those with significant skin laxity we use both Vaser and Laser. It’s great to have everything at your disposal so you can select the best tools for the greatest results.
In summary, I find that clients sincerely are surprised by how fast we can remove adipose tissue using Vaser. They are more pleased that we don’t use any sedation or mediations for pain. They love the idea of returning to work the next day and they are elated that they see a new contour in about 5 days—wow! Looking for the right home skin care

Everywhere women turn there is an advertisement promising miracle results for all your skin care needs. From Oil of Olay to Aveda, the skin care industry is filled with poor quality products that produce little to no results, supported by phenomenal marketing that boasts amazing effects. Women (and sometimes men too) are jaded by the hundreds of dollars they have spent for watered down “snake oil.”

So, how do my clients navigate through a saturated market full of false hope? I believe the key lies in educating clients on the importance of understanding home care. I like to teach them how they can decipher the secret code of a true quality products, versus diluted preservatives with a little water thrown in for consistency.

Let’s start with my five rules of thumb……

1) If you can purchase it in a mall, catalog, pharmacy, or grocery store, it’s probably not an effective product.

Famous brand names have made their homes in malls everywhere. I have many clients who swear by these big name brands, but they usually have genetically good skin. My clients who struggle with true skin disorders have learned early on that investing in good products is a necessity. In order for store-brand products to be readily available in store after store, for the low prices they offer, they have to be cheaply made. Think about it! It’s simple economics.

2) If the first three to five ingredients are the active ingredients, you have a winner!

Just like in food labeling, the FDA requires that skin care products list their ingredients with the first ingredient being the highest concentration. Typically, in low quality products, the active ingredients are listed near the bottom of the list. This indicates that the product is mostly preservatives, fillers, and water. It will also help to learn the scientific names of these products. For example, Vitamin E is labeled as tocopherol.

3) Is the person recommending the product a licensed skin care specialist?

Experienced licensed estheticians are usually the best people to ask about products. They are sometimes more educated in skin care than dermatologists! A good esthetician will research and personally try out the product line that they choose for their practice. They will understand how each ingredient works on skin and recommend the ideal product for you. Pyramid companies like Arbonne, Avon, and Mary Kay, usually have sales people who have not earned a license and are selling products as a part time income source. Also, what works for others, won’t always work for you. Just because your friend likes a product, doesn’t mean it is good for your specific skin needs. Many estheticians conduct complimentary skin analyses. A skin analysis is the best way to start to find the right skin care treatments for you.

4) Ignore the marketing and the fragrances.

Most skin care companies spend more money on celebrity endorsements, catchy marketing, and container design than they do in research and development. In other words, they spend more money trying to convince you that products work, instead of investing in developing products that actually yield results. Another tactic that companies use to sell low-quality products is adding an appealing fragrance. Fragrances may make a product pleasant to use, but they present many problems. Artificial fragrances increase the risk of rashes and allergic reactions because they are commonly paired with harmful ingredients that preserve the scent. Naturally scented products, on the other hand, are okay.

5) All Natural or Not At All?

Organics are growing in popularity and are actually my preference in skin care. The reason I prefer true organic products, is because they are more readily absorbed in the skin than synthetic ones. However, there are many excellent synthetic lines that work wonderfully. The rule of thumb here, is that if you choose an organic skin care line, make sure it’s really organic. Many famous “all natural” lines are in fact 100% manufactured. Aveda, for example, hides behind great fragrances and clever marketing, when in fact, they are a synthetic line.

Introducing the New Vaser!

This year more and more individuals are absolutely excited about the body contouring devices hitting the market. After months of researching smart and laser lipo devices, I elected to introduce a revolutionary procedure to my clients. Vaser just happens to be one of my favorites and I am absolutely excited to offer the all NEW Vaser Liposelect procedure.

Vaser Liposelect works by selectively melting fat with ultrasound technology. Unlike power assisted traditional liposuction such as Smart Lipo, Laser Lipo, Cool Lipo, or any other device for that matter, Vaser Liposelect targets fat cells NOT blood vessels or the connective tissues. It’s quite simple; fat cells resemble inflated water balloons. When the ultrasound wave from Vaser Liposelect comes in contact with that balloon, it ruptures. Since ultrasound is very specific, it will not disrupt blood vessels or the connective tissue. This is important in reducing bruising, pain, swelling, and uneven results.

Other technologies disrupt the integrity of the connective tissue leading to skin laxity; tear or cauterize blood vessels leading to bruising and improper fluid accumulation under the skin; and may produce uneven results by failing to evenly remove fat tissue. All this is minimized with the New Vaser Liposelect.

How does it work? A tiny infusion cannula is inserted into the skin for the introduction of tumescent fluid containing numbing medication. Next, the vaser liposelect cannula is introduced to emulsify fat. Finally, an aspiration cannula gently eliminates all fat and remaining fluid. Clients are fitted with a compression garment that shall be worn daily for seven days then nightly for several weeks. Patients will generally experience very little swelling, bruising, or discomfort post procedure.

Vaser targets two specific demographics. The first are those seeking to improve body contouring. Such individuals have unwanted fatty deposits of the neck; arms; bra strap; upper/lower abdomen; pubic region; flanks; saddlebags; inner thighs; and knees. The second are those seeking high definition body sculpting. We are known as the gym jocks and bunnies that train to achieve the most defined physique possible. My intrigue with Vaser Liposelect is the ability to selectively chisel away fat while using it to create enhanced muscle definition. You cannot do this with any other technology on the market.
